Back at the end of January i took a 10 day holiday over to shanghai to see my good friend joey. In fairness he has been asking me to go visit him for a couple of years now. I finally took the opportunity and did this once in a lifetime trip by myself. I know, i know first time ever travelling alone i have to say the experience wasn't all that nail biting. I arrived at Dublin airport on tuesday morning to get my first flight over to Heathrow. Then from there i got my connected flight for shanghai were we arrived in on wednesday morning. The flight over is 11 hrs i mainly kept myself busy by watching all the latest films or trying to get some shut eye. When the plane finally landed at shanghai airport i found i was a little bit more relaxed as i knew i was just minutes away from meeting up with joey. After catching up we moved from the airport to head on to joey's apartment to were he tells me he has to keep me awake until that night. I suppose he didn't want me getting jet lag!
After dropping off my suitcase we headed into the old town to walk around and also to stop off and take in a temple there. Crazy to think that so many of these beautiful temples are situated in the most crazy parts of shanghai city. These beautiful piece's of history to walk around are unbelievable magnificent to take in it just felt so surreal to be there. The next day with the sun shining we popped down to shanghai world financial center. We walked around to do the world tallest building the scenery up there is just unreal to take in and with the help of the sun shining you can really take in the full scale of how big shanghai is. We actually ended up staying the night in shanghai city as we had planned to head to Beijing for 3 days. The next part of my journey i will talk more about that and also include hangzhou.
Just letting you know i went over there for Chinese new year it helped that joey was off for two weeks which made the experience a little bit easier. For the first few days of this holiday it's all very quiet as the shanghai people would go home to spend a few days with the family. After that they will get out and about to travel around the country to take in some of the sights. Be prepared for the hustle and bustle of that during the day but once darkness falls it all goes calm as shanghai is not known for having much of a crazy nightlife scene.
Hope you enjoy the first part!
